The Medical Transcriptionist job is to transcribe the voice recordings of the doctor’s dictation into a text document. The doctors and patients discussion about the patient’s health problems and their medical reports are dictated by the doctor as dictation of voice recording. This dictated doctor’s voice recording is converted by the Medical Transcriptionist as text. The legal document of the patient has the relevant information about the patient’s physical examination, history, taking notes, assignments, office visit details, consultations and hospital discharge summaries. Dictations are done using various methods such as recording into a phone system, tapes and in a digital recording which can be sent as a computer sound file.  The Medical Transcriptionist must have clear vision, good hearing skills, knowledge in medical terms and must have a good speed when typing.

Apart from home the Medical Transcriptionist may also work in doctor’s offices and hospitals. Outsourcing of the medical transcription is also possible. The job of the Medical Transcriptionist is to record the patient and doctor’s conversation content. Doctors make the medical records as voice records and the Medical Transcriptionist transfer the voice recordings into a text file by using a word processor or a computer. The doctor receives his medical reports, the converted version from his voice recording. This converted medical document is the legal official medical document of the patient.

The employment qualification to become a Medical Transcriptionist is a two years associate degree or a certificate program of one year duration.  Employers prefer to have Medical Transcriptionists with computer and writing skills and also with a postsecondary training in Medical Transcription. This Medical Transcription training is provided by community colleges, vocational schools and as distance education programs. The course the students study in this training is medical terminology, legal issues in relation to health care documents. The perfect grammar and punctuation in English is an added advantage. To become a registered Medical Transcriptionist you must pass the AHDI level-1 registered Medical Transcription exam.   The salary for a Medical Transcriptionist is on an hourly basis and the job prospects are good.
